Michelle, David and I decided one morning to try out the sunrise bike ride from the top of the 10,000 foot summit of the Haleakala volcano. It is a 36 mile ride, all down hill, and probably the only place in the world where you can ride a bike for 36 miles and not have to pedal. The bike tour van (Maui Downhill) picks you up at the hotel at 3am, to get you to the summit by 5:30 to catch the sunrise. The sunrise was amazing... these pictures do not do it justice. The ride down the volcano takes about 4 hours, with lots of rest stops, a nice lunch, and ends up at a nice beach near the town of Paia. It was a great way to spend a day. As a cool side note, two of my good friends from Water Island just happened to work for the bike tour company. I had no idea that they were in Maui... we just kind of ran into each other on the tour and said "Holy S*it! I know you!". It is indeed a small world. |
